General information
This exciting expedition leads you along and through the fascinating and adventurous area of the Marowijne, Lawa and Tapanahony river. You pass exciting rapids and enjoy the beautiful view of the rainforest from the 374-metre-high barren Tebu top.
You get introduced to three Maroon communities and after you pass the mighty Gran Holo sula with the communities of the Wayana and the Trio Indians. In the local villages you learn more about the traditional lives of the people.
Day 1 Paramaribo - Albina - Mi Sa Boo
Departure is by bus through the east-west connection to the border city Albina. At arrival in Albina we get on an authentic wooden korjaal with outboard motor for a water adventure. During this boat ride several stops are made at among others a camp for gold digging along the Marowijne River.
At night at our campsite, the camp inmates will show us a masterpiece of traditional story telling (mato neti). The overnight stay is in an authentic camp in hammocks with mosquito nets at Misa Boo on the French side of the Marowijne River.
Day 2 Misa Boo - Ampoma fall
Today we get introduced to the lifestyles and cultures of the Maroon people. During an interesting walk through the tropical rainforest you experience how special nature can be. After the walk, there will be a visit to the mighty Ampoma sula. It is a real attraction to bathe in the lovely fast-flowing water, what sometimes seems a Jacuzzi with free massage. On the way back, we take a glance at the Paramaccan village Loka Loka.
In the evening there will be cultural dance and singing by the support team and the camp inmates. Overnight stay is at Misa Boo.
Day 3 Misaboo - Drietabbetje
Today the experienced and skilled boatmen sail us over spectacular sula's (rapids) such as: Mambari, Singatete and Poligoedoe. Near the merge of the Lawa and Tapanahonie River is a place called Stoelmans Island, founded by the Dutch Mr. Stoelman, where we make a short stop. The trip continues in the direction of the fascinating Granholo. It is possible to reach the other end of this sula via a footpath. There we hop on the korjaal again.
The final destination of this long day is Drietabiki, the residence of the giant chief of the Aucan people. Meet the local residents, who still live as they did 250 years ago. A deep African culture is maintained here. Overnight stay is in a simple camp in Drietabbetje.
Day 4 Drietabbetje - Apetina
In the morning we depart from Drietabiki. On the way, we will make several stops; to visit villages, have lunch and go for a swim. According to the tradition we stop at Granborie, the southernmost Maroon village, to inform the village chief about the purpose of our trip. By korjaal we sail further through the Granborie sula, where an enormous trial of strength between water and rocks takes place. Depending on the water level our combined forces need to drag the boat trough the sula to be able to continue our trip. After passing several rapids we arrive at the Indian village Apetina (known by the Maroon as Kamalua sula).
Apetina lies on a low hill along the banks of Tapanahonie River and in this village approximately 250 Wayana Indians live in typical huts on piles. Overnight stay is in a simple camp in Apetina.
Day 5 & 6 Apetina - Tebu
During these two days, we meet the Indians who live along the Tapanahony River, also known as the natives. The native guides show us how the people of the village live and how tasks are divided. Further more, there is a major hike on the program. During this hike we climb the 347-metres-high barren granite Tebutop. After this very heavy and strenuous climb the reward is a splendid view of the jungle and the river.
While staying in Apetina you can enjoy a lovely swim in the Mangaanda-futu waterfall, and of course enjoy the impressive nature that surrounds you. Overnight stay is in Apetina.
Day 7 Apetina - Drietabbetje
Today is the last day at the Wayana Indians. Before they take leave of us, they will offer souvenirs and handicrafts (made of seeds, wood and other materials from the forest). We sail back via the same route as we arrived on the Tapanahony River to Drietabbetje. Overnight stay is in Drietabbetje.
Day 8 Drietabbetje - Paramaribo
Our final activity on the program is a walk to the fascinating Granholo falls and Foetoe pasie. Depending on the time available before taking off, we will visit the Granman of the Aucan people. Return to Zorg en Hoop in Paramaribo by plane.
The program is subject to change.
