Brownsberg Upper Surinam

Day 1. Paramaribo - Brownsberg - Isadou



This alternating four-day trip includes culture - and natural elements. The tour starts in Paramaribo where we depart by bus to Brownsberg. The Brownsberg is a protected nature reserve and a must for nature lovers. After several hours travelling we arrive at the plateau of the mountain. From this point, with clear weather there are stunning views over the Brokopondo reservoir.

There will be a walk to the Leo and / or Irene waterfalls. In the afternoon the journey will continue over the jungle road to Atjoni where a korjaal boat is waiting for a cruise on the Surinam River to the little island Isadou at the Jaw Jaw sula. We sleep in authentic little huts with beds and mosquito nets.

Day 2. Isadou & Jaw Jaw



The next day, after a, hopefully, wonderful night in the jungle on the beautiful Upper Surinam river on the island Isadou, we bring a visit to the village Jaw Jaw. This village is inhabited by the Saramaccan: descendants of escaped slaves from previous centuries.

During a walk through the village an introduction is made of the hidden African lifestyle that has been preserved through the centuries. Enjoy a lovely dip in the rapids at the island. The overnight stay is on Isadou island.

Day 3. Gunsi New Aurora-Isadou



In the morning there will be an exciting cruise on the Surinam river to the beautifully situated village Gunsi, inhabited by Marron people and known for its beautiful carvings made by the local residents. After visiting the village, a walk through the forest along various plots of land used by the locals to grow fruits and vegetables, will lead to New Aurora: a mission post that includes a school and a medical post. After lunch there is time to relax and bathe in the rapids. In the afternoon we return to Isadou. At night it is possible to attend a traditional dance and music night with the local population (in consultation with the guide and on extra payment). The overnight stay is on Isadou.

Day 4. Isadou - Atjoni - Paramaribo



After breakfast the morning is free to spend as you like. Relax and bathe in the Jaw Jaw sula or go fish in the river. After lunch we depart by korjaal boat back to Atjoni. In Atjoni, the bus is ready for an exciting ride along the Poeder mountain, right through the jungle to Paramaribo. We arrive in the city in the evening.
