Brownsberg & Brokopondo reservoir
The Brownsberg (mountain) and Brokopondo water reservoir are two complete diverse and beautiful nature resorts, at a 45 minutes drive from Paramaribo. The Mazaroni plateau lies at an altitude of 500 meter, from where you have an unique view on the mountains and the Brokopondo water reservoir.The official name of the Brokopondo lake is Prof. Dr. Ir. Van Blommensteinmeer. This gigantic artificial lake of 1500 km², came into being in the ’60 by the construction of the dam in the Surinam river. Our offer consist of 2- 3 day trips, comb trips with the Upper Surinam region and adventurous canoe expeditions crossing the Brokopondo lake.
The Upper Surinam region
The upper part of the Surinam river, which rises in the Elertis de Haan mountains, is referred to as the Upper Surinam region. Here, the Saramacan (boslandcreolen) creoles live in the middle of the jungle. During the impressive korjaal boat trip, crossing the river with beautiful rock formations, sula’s (rapids) and sandbanks, you will pass little villages with waiving children, playing along the banks of the river. We offer trips to different islands in the river, such as Isaou, Awarradam and Danpaati and the Upper Surinam region.Centraal Surinam Nature reserve
The Central Surinam nature reserve is the biggest Amazon sanctuary in the world. In this reserve you find the Raleighfalls, Tafelberg (Table mountain) and Kayser and Eilerts de Haan mountains. The reserve is bordered in the North and West by the Coppename river and in the South by the South- and Lucieriver.In this beautiful, untouched and completely uninhabited paradise, deep in the interior of Surinam, you will find wild rapids, rivers and streams, Savanna landscapes, as well as primeval forest with overwhelming panoramic views from hill crests and mountain ridges.
Enjoy the view of unique birds flying past, such as parrots, toucans and (harpij) eagles. Along the river live giant otters, caiman, tapirs and capybara’s. It is very likely that you spot one of the many monkey species that exist in this region.
Matapica
This region is also referred to as the rough coast of Surinam, due to its long beaches, overgrown with mangrove trees and strewn with driftwood. This is the place to spot innumerable water birds and stilt- walkers, searching for food along the coastline and brood between the roots of the mangrove trees. From February till July different species of tortoise come ashore to lay eggs.We offer a several number of camp trips, where we travel by boat or canoe, to this fairly unknown area.
Commewijne
The Commewijne region, which lies northeast of Paramaribo, is an interesting area to discover by bike, boat or rental car. This region, once flourished by the plantations, now homes people which, for the most part, origin from Java. Along the way you will find a large number of warungs and market stalls with Javanese treats, by which it might seem you are finding yourself in Indonesia. Besides Fort New Amsterdam (open- air museum), there are a number of old plantations, such Mariënburg, Rust en Werk, Alkmaar, Alliance and Frederiksdorp that are worth visiting.You can opt for a 1-2 day excursions (by bike) to the plantation Frederiksdorp. Furthermore, we can recommend you a stay in the Hotel the Plantage in Tamanredjo, or book a self- drive tour through this region.
Para
At the South of Paramaribo lies the disctrict Para, with deserted plantations, the overgrown small train station at Onverwacht, the pleasant little village Domburg, traditional woodcarving – and pottery crafts, the botanical garden near Boxtel and several recreation resorts near Republiek.This is the perfect area to explore by yourself by bike or rental car. Stay over at Waterland River Resort and from here visit the sights in the neighborhood.
Marowijne region
This region, which is named after the Marowijne river – a typical Amazon river, which at the estuary is about 10 km wide –borders on the neighboring country French Guyana. In Albina, the ‘port’ of the Marowijne region, is usually a crowded place. The inhabitants of the Marowijne river come here with their korjalen and piaka’s (traditional crafts) to collect their stocks.The Indians live near the estuary of the river, this is the area around Galibi. The Paramacan and Aucan creols (boslandcreolen) - the descendents of the escaped African slaves- have settled in little villages on the banks of the Marowijne river, to the South of Albina.
This fascinating river has an immense number of sula’s (wild rapids) and tabbetjes (little islands). Furthermore, the estuary is a popular spot for sea turtles, who come here during the brood season to lay eggs.
Our offer consist of trips to the villages along the Marowijne river and trips to Galibi. We also offer a combination trip of these 2 destinations. During these trips you sleep in simple, local facilities with beds and mosquito nets.
Tapanahony region
The Tapanhony river is a typical Amazon river, which rises in the farthest South of Surinam, near ‘Het Grensgebergte’ (the border mountains), at the Brazil border. The winding river is characterized by enormous waterfalls, and huge wild rapids such as the Pulugudu falls and the Gran-olo sula.This sula (rapid) is so wild that, to cross the sula by korjal boat, Passengers have to get of the boat and carry the luggage to the other end of the sula. The boat need to be dragged overland along the sula. An unique and adventurous experience! The Tapahony river rises at Stoelmanseiland, together with the Lawariver in the Marowijne river.
Along the upper part of the river live the original inhabitants of Surinam, the Indians, also called the native people of Surinam. The Trio and Wajana Indians live on the banks of the river in little villages such as Pelelu Tepu, Palumeu and Apetina. In this quite unknown part of the region, you find jungle that is still entirely unspoilt. Typical for this region are the bold granite rock formations such as the Tebutop, the Kasikasima mountans and the Rosevelt peak.
During the expeditions hikes will be made to these peaks to enjoy an enchanting view.
The Corantijn & Kabalebo
The Corantijn river is an enormous border-river between Guyana and Surinam that rises in the Atlantic ocean near Nieuw Nickerie. The banks of this winding river with its many rapids, have hardly been lived at, which results in a unique flora and fauna. The region is of a unprecedented beauty and of such a diversity, a true paradise for nature lovers.We offer trips to the Kabalebo Jungle resort, the Blanche Marie falls and a jungle expedition to the Wonotobo falls.
Coesewijne-, Maratakka & Bigi Pan
Both rivers rise in the Northwest of Surinam, through Savanna, grassland, marsh forest, swamps and primary rainforest. Discover the unique animal species and vegetation in this alternating nature resort. Due to the low cover in this area, the animals are easy to trace.Bigi Pan is an interesting coastal region between Nickerie and Coronie.
We offer several boat trips, as well as canoe trips. This area can also be visited by a self-drive tour.
